Friday, June 20th was a big day for Deftones fans. It marked the 20-year anniversary for the release of White Pony, the 3rd studio album from Deftones. An album that is widely considered to be one of the top Nu-Metal albums of all time.
This is the album that put Deftones on the map with their electrifying and bone crushing sonic adventure into rap/rock/punk/industrial andmetal sound.
With a collaboration with Maynard James Keenan of Tool on the track, Passenger and having the album produced by Terry Date (a producing specialist in the rock genre) it’s no wonder White Pony is ranked as the 2nd best album of 2000 by Alternative Press Magazine and 66th in the “The Greatest Metal Albums of All Time” list by Rolling Stone Magazine in 2017.
The track, “Elite” won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2001.
It was also announced in a virtual press conference Friday that Deftones are going to release a White Pony remix LP titled Black Stallion. Each track will be remixed by a different producer to give it its own unique sound.
Front man, Chino Moreno said, “Electronic, beat-driven music was something we all gravitated towards in that time.” DJ Shadow is the only confirmed producer to contribute to the album thus far. We are excited to see the genius of DJ Shadow behind a Deftones remix and who else Deftones has up their sleeve for the upcoming Black Stallion album! They also released a White Pony merchandise capsule on the bands website where you can purchase newly designed White Pony merchandise for the 20th anniversary.
The icing on the Deftones 20th anniversary cake; It was just announced that tonight at 6pm (Pacific) Deftones will hold a global listening party on their YouTube channel where some of the members will be surprising us in the live chat.
So far it’s unannounced as to whom will be on but if you are a Deftones fan, one thing you know is that they like to leave you in suspense until the last moment (much like Eros)!
