ENGLISH BEAT IN SOCAL

English Beat Hits So Cal

November 1, 2021 by by Traci Turner

We’ve had some great shows in OC lately and there’s another one happening on February 19th: English Beat will invade Riverside!
Skank the night away with a legendary band as they hit the stage. This band is one of the originators of the two-tone ska genre and they will perform live an din person.
Since their inception as The Beat in England, Wakeling has been entertaining us with their upbeat and engaging music. It all began with their version of the Smokey Robinson & The Miracles song “Tears of a Clown,” that they played on “Top of The Pops.” With a little help from the two-tone ska documentary “Dance Craze,” there was no looking back.
Thanks to Paul Collins, their British invasion saw them change their name to The English Beat. Their catalog has been part of our lives through radio, movies and tv. The ’80s and ’90s gave us hits like “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Best Friend,” “Rankin’ Full Stop,” “Rough Rider,” “Twist and Crawl,” “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” “Hands Off, She’s Mine,” “Save It for Later,” and “I Confess.”  In addition to English Beat tunes, Wakeling often shares some of his General Public songs like “Tenderness,” “Never You Done That,” and “Hot You’re Cool.”
English Beat today is simply an electric band to see and hear live. The band features Wakeling lead guitar and vocals, Antonee First Class as the band’s toaster, Kevin Lum on keys (backing vocals), Mihn Quan also on keys (and backing vocals), Brad Engstrom on bass, Matt Morrish on sax, and Brian “Nucci” Cantrell on drums. With Wakeling’s humor and direct engagement with the crowd, and insert Antonee’s entertaining toast master repartee, this is a must-see show.

Now if there’s a smile on my face
it’s only there trying to fool the public, but when it comes down to fooling you, now honey that’s quite a different subject.

Spend some time with this legendary band and have the time of your life as you count down to midnight!
