A brand spankin’ new festival is headed our way! The inaugural Flannel Nation is a ‘90s celebration slated for August 13 at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro.
There are plenty of ‘80s events going around, but now we can relive the ‘90s! The days of flannel, grunge, dark lipstick, and long hair were highlighted by the bands that changed music forever: Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam. So many bands from those years remain a daily part of our lives and Flannel Nation will help scratch that live music itch.

While a special guest headliner is still being kept secret until May, the iconic bands already on board are perfect! Everclear, Soul Asylum, Filter, Fastball, Sponge, Cracker and Candlebox symbolize ‘90s music – but thankfully, they are all still rocking the stage in this era. In fact, OC Music News saw several of them last year and can confirm they put on a fantastic show!
Ok, so what are we looking at so far? Everclear in one corner had uber-hits, “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” and “Everything to Everyone.”
Whereas in the other corner, Soul Asylum brought us larger than life songs, “Runaway Train,” “Black Gold,” “Misery,” and “Somebody to Shove.”
Filter bring us another round of era defining songs such as “Hey Man Nice Shot,” “Take a Picture,” and “Trip Like I Do.”
Seriously, this line up is stacked already! Throw in Fastball, Sponge, Cracker and Candlebox and it’s pretty damn amazing.
As for the creation of this new festival, I had to check in with the man himself. Scott Tucker, who saw a hole in the market; the ‘80s are well covered, but many (including me!) have been craving a ‘90s event. Now Tucker is making it happen. Of course, he’s not just some dude putting bands together. Tucker is responsible for events we already love such as Like Totally Fest (‘80s music) and the incredible So Cal Hoedown (punk and rockabilly). The man knows what he is doing and is passionate about making his events successful. I did try to get Tucker to divulge more, but the man knows how to keep a secret!
Flannel Nation will take place at the Port of Los Angeles with a 12-acre space and the Lane Victory battleship on site. This exciting event will run 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. and kids under six are free! Tucker promises “a day of live music with some of the era’s top bands, tons of delicious food trucks, craft beer, full bar, and lots of retail vendors for shopping.”
Now you are likely getting as psyched as I am. Ready-set-go, tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m.
As Tucker says, “Mark your calendar, pull out the Doc Martins and Converse, bring the kids, the wife, the whole family, and bring your thirst for fun!” Flannel Nation is going to become one of our favorite new annual festivals!
