Indie rock icons Death Cab for Cutie are back with a new album and fall tour. Their 10th studio album, “Asphalt Meadows” will arrive September 16th, and the Grammy winners shared the first track, “Roman Candles.”
Per the band, “‘Roman Candles’ is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet. And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go.”
Lead singer and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard explained, “The lyrics were cobbled from a couple of different songs dealing with my general sense of anxiety; the feeling that the fabric that weaves a functioning society together was crumbling during the pandemic.”

One of the ways Gibbard got through the pandemic was a series of livestreams which also helped to raise more than $250K for various Seattle-area organizations. During the streams, he shared songs from Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service, and his solo material and covers.
In their 25 years as a band, Death Cab for Cutie have released nine studio albums with the last one being 2018’s “Thank You for Today,” home to hit single “Gold Rush.” Through the decades, the Washington band has had success with songs like “Soul Meets Body,” “I Will Possess Your Heart,” and “I Will Follow You into the Dark.”
Their nationwide tour will stop in SoCal for three shows: October 18th at House of Blues Anaheim, October 21st at The Greek, and October 22nd in San Diego (venue not announced).
While there will be multiple support acts depending on city, Yo La Tengo will cover the SoCal shows. Tickets are on sale now!
