Throw Rag | Franks & Deans

October 21, 2021 by Kevin Gomez
Halloween comes early as Throw Rag and Franks & Deans come to Alex’s Bar in Long Beach on Saturday, October 30th.

Hailing from the Salton Sea, Throw Rag combines elements of punk, rockabilly and psychobilly.  The one consistent member since its inception has been lead singer, Sean Wheeler, previously known for sporting a captain’s hat.  The high-octane rock band has released four albums since forming in the early 90s, including a DVD on Kung Fu’s acclaimed “The Show Must Go Off” series.  The band most recently played a great set at So Cal Hoedown last month.
Also playing Saturday will be Las Vegas’s favorite sons, Franks & Deans.  If you’ve never heard of them, think Vegas lounge act meets burlesque show, meets comedy and punk rock.  Or as lead vocalist, guitarist Sampson explains it, “we’re here to f*ck up your grandma’s music.”
Still confused?  Four talented musicians take pop standards and oldies, then reimagine them as punk songs, often incorporating legendary punk tunes.  For instance, a song will start off as NOFX’s “The Brews,” then while keeping the same beat, the lyrics will then change, and Sampson will begin singing Bobby Darin’s “Dream Lover” and it all comes together perfectly.

2913 E. ANAHEIM STREET
LONG BEACH, CA 90804
While co-lead vocalist and guitarist, Hoss previously played in punk and hard rock bands, he shows he can belt out sultry songs, such as the Dean Martin mambo, “Sway.”  Bassist and legitimate crooner, Robert DeTie belts out incredible covers of Dean Martin’s, “ You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You” and Frank Sinatra’s classic, “New York, New York.”  The burlesque aspect comes from the multi-talented, Nickole Muse who dances, stripteases, and even hula-hoops among other activities while the band plays.  Keeping the beat together is newest member, Steven “Meat Bag” Lendrum, an impressive drummer from Arizona.
Opening the show will be Los Angeles’s Egg Drop Soup and father-daughter two-piece band, Bent Duo.
Tickets are $15 plus service fees available via dice.fm.  It should also be noted that Alex’s Bar’s website states that, “Due to new mandates from the City of Long Beach we are forced to require a negative COVID 19 test taken within 72 hours of event OR a vaccination card upon entry.
