It was a sunny April day in Huntington Beach, CA. April 20, 2012, to be exact. 420 Day! I dropped my son off at school and snuck off to the movies to catch the first showing of the new documentary, “Marley,” on opening day. While my son loved Bob too, I needed to see this one alone! I was so excited and curious to learn more about the great Bob Marley as I grabbed my ticket and joined fellow Marley fans in line that day.
Eight years later, I was even more excited and curious as I plopped on the couch and logged into YouTube to catch the first episode of Bob Marley – Legacy: 75 Years A Legend.
As promised in last week’s article, “Marley 75 | The Life and Legacy of Bob Marley,” we will explore the first episode of the recently released docu-series, with continued coverage of each episode as they are released.
Since Bob Marley’s untimely death in 1981 from cancer at the young age of 36, there have been approximately 12 biographical movies vastly documenting the singers’ music career, family, and contribution to the Jamaican culture, as well as the Rastafari and Reggae communities.
This year, in honor of the year-long celebration of the late reggae king’s 75th birthday, the Marley family has released the docu-series Bob Marley – Legacy: 75 Years A Legend. The first episode of the 12-part docu-series was released on February 28, 2020, on the YouTube channel Bob Marley. With 441k views, in just 4 weeks, you don’t want to wait another minute to see it!
The nearly 20-minute intimate peek into the life of Bob Marley is engaging, entertaining, informative, and exquisitely done. This couldn’t have been released at a better time. Hosted by son Ziggy, with candid appearances by his children, as well as some of his grandchildren. Ziggy also chats with industry greats as rare live footage, and vintage photos play. They share fond personal memories about Bob’s dedicated work ethic, the profound messages behind his music, and his countless contributions to the community. They also share how the family continues to carry on his legacy.
“He left us so many great messages. If only these people of the world could get back in tune like the way they were once in tune.” – Buju Banton.
Stay tuned as we take you through the family’s continued contribution to the Rasta nation, and the recent release of the EP “Iron, Lion, Zion.” As well as the new exclusive merchandise in celebration of Bob’s 75th birthday.
