MT. JOY
The North American Tour
August 4, 2023 by Brian Ross
With an ear to the ground, the growing sound in popularity for indie rock, folk-infused band, Mt. Joy is not that of a rumble, but an eruption with musical magma overflowing into the summer of 2023.
They will bring their extreme heat to Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego on August 23rd, then up Interstate to play the Greek on August 25th. As a lead up to their SoCal shows, the band will perform two back-to-back nights at Mullet Arena, Tempe, AZ (just one wasn’t good enough), and even more impressive, two sold-out, consecutive evenings at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

The band started in 2016 with a splash launching with their single “Astrovan,” it simply uploaded onto Spotify (audio streaming; a modern-day gateway). This number was followed by a host of singles, like “Silver Lining,” “Sheep,” and “Cardinal,” each one an emotional gem when performed live.
But, rapid streaming success hasn’t been the band’s only fate. Hitting the road as support for The Head and the Heart, The Shins, Whitney, and The Revivalists absolutely helped, as well as Mt. Joy’s appearances at major festivals like Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza.
Relative to time lost in a pandemic, this band quickly paid its dues. Yet, arguably, well-executed, catchy tunes and full-length albums that rally the social-consciousness, frustrations and spirit of our times, have been their biggest achievement (it’s a real band with an all-original catalog of generational, pre-to-post pandemic trending hits).
Their latest album, “Orange Blood,” adds to their destiny. Numbers like “Evergreen,” “Bathroom Light,” “Lemon Tree,” and the title track hold vocally strong and thematically steady with the band’s alluring musical identity.
Mt. Joy is solid thanks to Matt Quinn (lead vocals/guitar), along with his long-time friend Sam Cooper (lead guitar/vocals), Sotris Eliopoulus (drums/vocals), Jackie Miclau (keys/vocals), and Michael Byrnes (bass/vocals) completing the lineup — all fresh faces. So, join the times. Catch the craze. Savor the summer. For many, Mt. Joy will be a favorite show.
