On January 6th, the Hollywood Palladium played host to a sold-out show that brought together an impressive lineup of punk rock bands that included MxPx, Less Than Jake, Relient K, and The Smoking Popes. In an era where live music is cherished more than ever, this concert promised an unforgettable experience for fans of these four bands.
As I entered the legendary Palladium, excitement and anticipation filled the air, setting the stage for an evening of unfiltered energy and pure punk!
The Smoking Popes kicked off the show with a bang. Their sound was a perfect fit, and their high-energy performance and catchy melodies had the crowd instantly hooked. They entertained fans – old and new – with “Let’s Hear It for Love,” “Simmer Down,” “Megan,” and “Need You Around.” That last one brought a loud roar from old er fans as it was a KROQ classic that everyone sang along to.
As the night went on, the audience eagerly awaited Relient K’s turn on stage.
Known for their unique blend of pop-punk and alt rock, the Ohio natives did not disappoint the growing crowd.

Their infectious grooves and chemistry was immediately apparent, as they dove into their set with unwavering enthusiasm.
Relient K’s catchy hooks and introspective lyrics resonated with the crowd, who really seemed to enjoy “Be My Escape,” “I Don’t Need a Soul,” “Move to Bremerton” (an MxPx cover), “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been,” and “Sadie Hawkins Dance.”
Following Relient K, was Less Than Jake. From Florida, this band was no stranger to the SoCal crowd. They took the stage with an explosion of sound and enthusiasm that had the crowd instantly hooked.
Known for their energetic ska-infused punk rock, they delivered a high-octane set that had the entire venue skanking and bouncing along.
The band’s brass added an extra layer of excitement to their performance, with the trombone punctuating the driving beats and infectious riffs. Classics like “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads” and “The Science of Selling Yourself Short” had the audience singing and dancing in unison. Less Than Jake’s ability to blend punk, ska, and pop sensibilities showcased their versatility and made for an unforgettable performance. Other favorites of the night included “Last One Out of Liberty City,” “The High Cost of Low Living,” “Automatic,” “History of a Boring Town,” and “Sugar in Your Gas Tank.”
With a fervor that could be felt in every corner of the Palladium, MxPx delivered a high-octane performance that left the audience breathless. From the first note to the last, They captivated the crowd with their signature sound.
Opening with the adrenaline-fueled “Not Today” and “This Is What You Told Me,” the band set the tone for an unforgettable night. Lead vocalist and bassist Mike Herrera commanded the stage with his charismatic presence, and his raw, powerful vocals resonated throughout the venue, carrying the emotion and energy of each song.
The setlist was a perfect mix of fan favorites and new material, showcasing the band’s evolution while staying true to their roots. Tracks like “Chick Magnet,” “Responsibility,” and “Ready to Rage” had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, their voices blending in with the band’s.
MxPx’s tight musicianship was on full display, with guitarist Tom Wisniewski and drummer Yuri Ruley delivering an impeccable performance. Their precise and energetic playing elevated each song to new heights, while maintaining the raw punk edge that has defined MxPx’s sound for over two decades.
Mike Herrera frequently engaged with the audience, sharing stories, and expressing gratitude for their ongoing support. MxPx’s genuine connection with their fans was evident, and it only further fueled the energy in the room. As the show neared its end, they closed with “Call Me” and “Let’s Ride.” But as an encore, MxPx unleashed their iconic hits, “My Life Story” and “Punk Rawk Show,” eliciting a massive sing-along that resonated with a sense of nostalgia and celebration… capping off a perfect punk rock extravaganza.
