Set to Drop
July 27th, 2025 by Kevin Gomez
Deftones have always been known for their mystique – whether it’s lead singer Chino Moreno’s mysterious and obscure lyrics, or their personal lives – and that often comes with their albums as well.
In the past they’ve released teasers and even puzzles regarding new music, and they kept that going with their performance on June 29th at Crystal Palace Park in London.

A message appeared on the side screen of the stage that simply stated, “private music” (in all lowercase), along with a date at the bottom in roman numerals, that translated to July 10th, 2025. Fans immediately began speculating this may be the title and release date for their next album.
While the album didn’t exactly drop on that date, July 10th was the date the band confirmed what fans had believed: their 10th studio album entitled, “private music,” will be released on August 22nd. Their post featured the album cover artwork, simply a white California Kingsnake set against a neon green background.

The album was co-produced by the band and recorded in Malibu, Joshua Tree, and Nashville. “private music” was also produced with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz, who they worked with previously on “Diamond Eyes” and “Koi No Yokan.”
To quench fans’ thirst, the band dropped their first single, “my mind is a mountain.” Interesting note, the full title tracks are now available to view (but not listen) on all streaming media, and much like the album’s title, all of the tracks are listed in lowercase.
Not only is “my mind is a mountain” the lead single, but it’s also the very first track on the album.
It’s a strong single to lead off with, and if it’s any indication of the rest of the album, I think Deftones are picking up right where they left off with 2020’s “Ohms.”
“Ohms” wound up being one of their most critically-acclaimed albums, and really seemed to rejuvenate both the band and their fanbase. As I wrote earlier this year regarding their North American tour, Deftones remarkably seem to be more popular than they ever have been, some 30 years into their career.
Although known for writing lengthier hard rock anthems, “my mind is a mountain” clocks in just under three minutes. Led by heavy guitar from Steph Carpenter and a pounding drumbeat from Abe Carpenter, the song is almost reminiscent of their hit, “Diamond Eyes.”

As if all of this excitement was not enough, Deftones just announced their sixth annual Dia De Los Deftones show will be returning to Petco Park in San Diego.

As always they will headline the music festivals with performances from Clipse, 2Hollis, Rico Nasty, Deafheaven, Regulo Caro, Ecca Vandal, and Glare University, all across two stages.
Before then, the band will finish off the second leg of their North American tour with support from Idles or Phantogram on select dates, with The Barbarians of California.
