Live at
Helpful Honda Sound Space
September 9, 2024 by James Keith
It takes a lot for a band to cause a ruckus in L.A., but that’s exactly what happened last week when Sum 41 visited the Helpful Honda Sound Space at the KROQ studios.

It is no secret that Ontario, Canada’s number one sons are in the midst of their farewell tour. I know, it’s hard to believe; it seems like they were just teens rapping in that liquor store to “Fat Lip.” But it was 2001 when that happened, and in 2024, it’s sunset time for this grand band from Canada.

It’s appropriate that in the state of the Beach Boys, it’s been an endless summer with record high temps and all. Despite the accelerated mercury, the fans who won tickets through the station were out and ready to take in the show. The crowd was there early, and they were pumped to see their favorite Canucks.

Before the show started, drive time DJ Kevan Kenney sat down with the band for a 20-minute chat. Lead singer Deryck Whibley thanked KROQ for helping “a bunch of teenagers from Toronto” get started. He said they still remember hearing their song played on KROQ for the very first time.

When it was time for Sum 41 to take the stage, it was wall to wall bodies and the energy was palpable. The crowd was into it from start to finish with little mosh pits breaking out here and there.
Sum 41 opened with “Motivation,” “The Hell Song,” and “Over My head (Better Off Dead).” Then the hit parade launched the decibel level into a different atmosphere with their latest, “Landmines,” followed by “Dopamine.”

Sum 41 proved they are killer with Whibley on rhythm guitar and behind the mic, Dave “Brownsound” Baksh on lead guitar, Jason “Cone” McCaslin on bass, Tom Thacker shredding on the other lead guitar, and drummer Frank Zummo was bangin’ it out.
The guys were totally in sync (no pun intended), and they sounded incredible as they knocked out the balance of the set with fan favorites “In Too Deep,” “Still Waiting,” and the biggie, “Fat Lip.”

There are a lot of cool places to see a show, but what KROQ has developed over the years is a solid place to see solid bands at The Sound Space. Any opportunity you can find to see a show there, take it!

As for Sum 41, their farewell tour continues. They are hitting the road with ska-punk darlings, The Interrupters and they will return to SoCal on October 3rd at YouTube Theater.
