Pledge “Allegiance”
January 5, 2025 by Traci Turner
Pop-punk-alt-rockers Smoking Popes are releasing a protest track today titled “Allegiance” and it will hit home with at least half of the country… and the world.
Front-man Josh Caterer said, “Two days after the [November 5, 2024] election, I was filled with anger and disgust over the result, so I picked up a guitar and poured some of those feelings into a song, which turned into this two-and-a-half-minute punk protest tune.” He went on, “It was written and recorded really quickly and we wanted to release it as soon as possible because it speaks to this moment we’re living in. And we’re excited that Scott was able to be part of it. He’s such a great singer…I think having his voice in there adds to the urgency of the message.”

The “Scott” in question is Local H‘s Scott Lucas, who lends vocals to the song.
The Chicago band has an album due out in March, “Lovely Stuff,” and will hit the road next month for an extensive US tour. The tour runs through May and includes stops in St. Louis, Atlanta, Orlando, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, and Buffalo. The jaunt is intended to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their album “Born to Quit.”
In addition to Josh Caterer, Popes includes his brothers Matt and Eli, along with Mike Felumlee. Fans from back in the day will remember “Need You Around” from the “Clueless” soundtrack, “I Know You Love Me,” “Megan,” and “My Lucky Day.” Of course, as part of the celebration of “Born to Quit,” fans will hear “Rubella,” “Gotta Know Right Now,” and “Mrs. You and Me.”
Listen to “Allegiance” now and look for a Smoking Popes show near you immediately after!
