SET TO PLAY COACHELLA
March 3rd, 2025 by Kai Dek
Since its formation in the late ‘80s, Green Day has become one of the most influential punk rock bands of all time. They have consistently led the genre in popularity and inventiveness, all while staying true to their rebellious roots. Decades later, Green Day refuses to fade, still loud and fired up, consistently performing and working on undertakings.
Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were just 14 when they formed their first band called Sweet Children. After a few lineup changes, they were eventually joined by current drummer Tré Cool (Frank Edwin Wright III) and settled on the band name Green Day.

A year later, in 1990, the trio released their debut studio album, “39/Smooth,” then “Kerplunk” in 1991, obtaining critical and commercial success for the band.

But their real introduction into mainstream success was the release of their 1994 album, “Dookie.”
The release set the band on a new trajectory. It was filled with songs we now consider classics, like “Basket Case,” “Longview,” “She,” When I Come Around,” and “Welcome to Paradise.”
The album sold over 20 million copies worldwide and earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album.

The band continued to evolve their sound while keeping its music’s raw, rebellious energy alive.
In 2004, they released the momentous rock album “American Idiot,” which reignited their career and introduced them to a new generation of fans and ushered a new era for them as the voice of a generation.
They touched on themes of disillusionment and societal unrest in America post 9/11, giving us anthems like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
In January 2024, the trio returned with the release of their 14th studio album, “Saviors,” followed by an ongoing world tour featuring an eclectic setlist of new and old material.

The band considers “Saviors” as the final installment in a trilogy that began with “Dookie” and continued with “American Idiot.”
Consider them victims of their own success. After a decade of arguably lesser than expected record sales, “Saviors” was seen as a return of peak Green Day. The album was immediately beloved by fans worldwide.

The 2024 Saviors tour that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas killed it last summer.
Next month, Green Day fans will have the opportunity to witness them perform at America’s most influential music festival, Coachella 2025.

This will be the band’s first Coachella performance, headlining both Saturdays, April 12th and 19th. Other Coachella headliners include: Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Jimmy Eat World, Kraftwerk, Circle Jerks, Travis Scott, Missy Elliott, The Prodigy, The Original Misfits, Amyl and the Sniffers, Viagra Boys, Bob Vylan and Charli XCX.
This will also be Green Day’s only SoCal appearance, according to their current schedule, so make your trek to the desert!
