GOING BACK TO

with Missy Elliott
March 11th, 2025 by Kai Dek
Coachella is less than a month away and music fans can expect two weekends of top-tier talent with the who’s who of the music industry set to take the stage.

Headliners include Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, Megan Thee Stallion, and Travis Scott, along with artists dominating music now – Charli XCX, Benson Boone, Shaboozey, and Japanese Breakfast.
Jimmy Eat World, Amyl and the Sniffers, Three 6 Mafia, Tyla, Bob Vylan, The Prodigy, Ty Dolla $ign, Viagra Boys, and Lisa are also current artists sure to put on fantastic performances, but Coachella is also bringing out some legends for us too – The Go-Go’s, Kraftwerk, Circle Jerks, The Original Misfits, and the one and only Missy Elliott.

Few artists have ushered as much change and evolution in the music industry as the acclaimed Missy Elliott. Her contribution to the R&B and rap genres has built a path for many of today’s most prominent artists.

Even after three decades of genre-bending contributions, Missy Elliott is still prominent and one of hip-hop’s most revered figures.
After a traumatic childhood, teenage Elliott formed the group Sista with some friends, along with the legendary producer and her childhood friend, Timbaland. Elliot spent the next few years curating her style while attempting to understand and master the complicated music business.
Working closely with Timbaland, the pair spent the mid-‘90s working behind the scenes crafting some of R&B’s biggest hits, including Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” and “If Your Girl Only Knew,” and tracks for Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.
With the collapse of her group, Elliott released her debut solo album, “Supa Duba Fly,” which established her as a success thanks to the hit single, “The Rain,” and its iconic accompanying video.
Elliott directly challenged the music industry’s norms for women in videos, something she became known for, often breaking pre-established standards.
While many ‘90s R&B and hip-hop artists faded out by the new millennium, for Elliott, it brought the peak of her career.
Released in 2001, her album “Miss E… So Addictive” gave us the instant energetic hit “Get Ur Freak On,” and earned her a Grammy.
She followed a year later with “Under Construction,” featuring classics like “Work It” and “Gossip Folks.” “Work It” won another Grammy and during this time, Elliott was the best-selling female rapper with multiple platinum albums.

Nearly two decades later, Elliott’s contributions and skills are still being recognized. In 2019, she became the first female rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In 2023, she became the first hip-hop artist in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Proving once and for all that there is nothing the incomparable Melissa Arnette Elliott aka Miss E can’t do!

In 2025, Elliott is set to add another feat to her legacy when she returns to the festival stage at Coachella 2025, performing both Saturdays.
Don’t miss Elliott – and everyone else – at The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio April 11th-13th and April 18th-20th.
